Find answers to your frequently asked questions about
Karuna Recovery and sober living.

Why Sober Living?

What's the difference between sober living and a rehab facility, outpatient program, or 12-step community?

Unlike outpatient treatment or 12-step, a recovery residence is a place to live. And unlike a rehab facility, sober living is flexible, semi-structured, and feels like home. Because sober homes don't have the resources to see patients through detox, most of our clients have been in primary treatment at some point.

How will living in a recovery residence help me stay sober?

Learning or relearning how to care for yourself requires practice. Sober homes provide just enough structure to help you master self-care in a supportive environment—while enjoying freedom and normalcy. Eventually, what you learn at Karuna becomes second nature.

Moving In

What are the requirements to live in a Karuna Home?

In order to qualify as a resident, you must:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Be serious about your recovery
  • Have achieved at least 24 hours of sobriety
  • Agree to Karuna Residence rules and standards
  • Have no history of sexual or violent crimes

How long should I stay?

Sobriety is a different journey for everyone. You can stay with is for as little a month but we recommend you stay at least 90 days to develop a routine. If you'd like to stay longer, you're welcome to, as long as it's helping your sobriety.

What's included in my monthly fees? When do I pay?

Your monthly bill includes: utilities, telephone service, HD premium TV, and wireless internet and unlimited use of house computers, printers, and washer/dryers, paper goods, cleaning supplies, hand soaps and sanitizers, laundry needs, and coffee/sugar. A well-maintained kitchen with modern appliances, coffee maker, microwave oven, pots, pans and cooking implements is also included. You'll pay your first month's fees prior to moving in.

Life at Karuna

What's the curfew? And will I be able to stay elsewhere overnight?

Between 8:00 AM and 10:00 PM, Karuna residents work, go to school, go to meetings, volunteer, and participate in countless enriching activities. If a specific activity interferes with curfew hours, let us know and we can make exceptions.

For the first month, we require that you stay at Karuna every night to build routine and get comfortable. After that point, overnight stays are welcome with advance notice.

What if I relapse?

If you relapse, we discharge you from the house immediately. If your case allows, you may return, sober, 24 hours later. Continuous relapses may require acute care. We can recommend a program, and you can always return to Karuna afterwards.
