Let’s face it, overcoming addiction is perhaps the most difficult thing you have had to do in your life so far. Statistics show that only about 10% of people who go through treatment centers will remain sober for five years. Effective treatment, along with a long-term plan that includes sober living, counseling, and 12-step meetings, increases the likelihood of five-year sobriety to nearly 60%.

Karuna Recovery Residences has added another home to their list of growing affordable luxury sober living homes in California. Located in the historic and affluent Hancock Park neighborhood of West Hollywood, Highland House is not your typical recovery residence. With its spacious bedrooms, huge picture windows, and light and airy decor, Highland House is a multi-million dollar sober living home that nearly everyone can afford. Built in 1928 and meticulously maintained, the newly-remodeled home houses up to ten residents in its four spacious bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths.

The Prescription Drug Addiction Epidemic

Written by

Addiction to illegal drugs and the legalization of some controlled substances is often a hot political and social topic. Unfortunately, there is another related issue that commonly gets ignored or written off. Dependence on drugs that are already completely legal all too often goes under the radar. Prescription drug abuse still remains one of the most poorly recognized types of addiction.

Prescription drugs generally work by either suppressing or promoting chemical reactions in the brain. The most commonly abused types are stimulants, opiates, and sedatives. Sound familiar? Not only do these legal drugs have similar effects and chemical makeups to illegal drugs like heroin or speed, they are just as addictive and dangerous if abused.

Restoring Relationships After Addiction

Written by

The cool fall breeze is blowing and the holidays are just around the corner. In just weeks, friends and families will be gathering together to exchange gifts and eat large meals together. Love and generosity will fill the air, and relationships will grow in the spirit of the season.

So often though, those who are new in recovery won’t experience the spirit of the holiday season. Jaded by broken relationships and still rebuilding their connections to family, many who are new in recovery won’t be surrounding themselves with family during these holidays. Many will spend it alone, hoping to someday restore the broken relationships with their family damaged by years of addiction.

For more than forty years, America has been at war with its own citizens fighting the so-called “war on drugs.” Sensationalized by the media and used as a platform by politicians since the 1970s, this war has effected every level of society. Law enforcement officials point to large numbers of drug convictions and arrests as “victories,” but in truth, the war on drugs has been a failure almost from the beginning. No country in the world has a higher incarceration rate than the U.S.; more than one out of every 100 American adults is in prison. More people are jailed for drug-related crimes than any other offense. America has the world’s highest rate of lifetime drug despite its harsh drug policies. However, countries that have moved away from the U.S. model of drug criminalization have not seen an increase in drug use or drug-related crime.
